A digital twin is more than a dashboard or static simulation. It synchronises a physical system and virtual model to observe, diagnose, predict or optimise an outcome. Value begins with the decision: maintenance timing, production schedule, energy setting, commissioning or risk response. Detail that does not improve the decision is cost, not fidelity.
Scope should specify the asset boundary, decision horizon, refresh rate and acceptable uncertainty. Sensors need known calibration and lineage; operational data requires semantic consistency and time alignment. Expose where observations end and assumptions begin. NIST emphasises data, interoperability, verification, validation and uncertainty as foundations of trustworthy twins.
Credibility is use-specific. A model adequate for monitoring may be unsafe for automated control. Validate outputs against observed behaviour across normal, edge and changed conditions; track drift as equipment, inputs or operating policies evolve. Material consequences require human review and override. Synchronisation does not guarantee truth if sensors, mappings or model structure are wrong.
The case includes instrumentation, integration, compute, modelling and process change. Compare simpler monitoring or analytics. Prioritise frequent decisions, costly downtime or expensive experiments. NIST notes estimated downtime of 8.3%�13.3% of planned production time in US discrete manufacturing, illustrating the scale of opportunity but not proving value for every asset.
Operate the twin as a product with an owner, users, versioning and retirement criteria. Measure forecast error, decision lead time, avoided downtime, yield, energy, intervention quality and confidence calibration. Record recommendation acceptance and outcomes. Digital twins create advantage when validated insight changes operations reliably�not when visual sophistication outruns evidence.
